Our enjoyment is muted because the movie has an agenda. But who needs truth? All we want is an entertaining story.ДЁ Mile is entertaining to an extent. Enough of the story mirrors Eminem's life that we feel we're witnessing the truth. Whether because of Grazer's habit or Eminem's desires, it's designed to make us feel good about the protagonist. It's like the books politicians put out before they run for president. Then, again, he isn't.ДЁ Mile is a carefully crafted fictionalized biography. The movie is another example of Eminem playing with personas, the way he does in his songs. Basinger, a limited actress, won an Oscar for her work in L.A.

The film attempts to take us on an emotional journey, but Eminem doesn't know how to shape a performance that takes us along for the ride.ДЄs far as acting, the heavy lifting is done by Basinger and Mekhi Phifer, as Rabbit's stalwart buddy, a fellow rap warrior. His mystique is the film's selling point, but the story would be better served by having a real actor in the role. He's particularly good at projecting an air of sulkiness. Worse, she's shacked up with a violent jerk a few years older than Rabbit.Д®minem glides through so many personas on his CDs you'd think acting would be second nature. He's ashamed to admit it, but he's moved back into the trailer with his mom ( Kim Basinger) and sister on the outskirts of town. He's broken up with his live-in girlfriend for reasons never explained. The only other white people who register in this world are the women in his life, particularly Alex ( Brittany Murphy), a zombie-eyed wraith who is at least as determined as Rabbit to make good, only with no skills to speak of save sex.ДЄs if his isolation isn't enough to make Rabbit sullen, he's also struggling at home. His is pretty much the only white face in the room, certainly the only one on stage, and heat-packing thugs keep calling him names. Standing before a Detroit crowd to compete in the underground battles in which rappers earn their reps frightens him, however, as it should. Rabbit is exalted by his circle of friends. To Eminem's array of personas, now add Jimmy Smith, aka Bunny Rabbit, 8 Mile's sullen young man, an outsider in whatever crowd he's with. It doesn't deal with the thorny issues it raises except to cast them as obstacles for the hero to overcome. 8 Mile has a hip-hop beat but marches as if to a dirge.Д®ven more unfortunate is the way Grazer and Hanson have chosen to tell this tale, which is undergirded by sensitive issues of race and class, in the broad form of the Hollywood biopic, which is prone to hero worship, no matter how many blemishes it may show.ДЁ Mile is about a suffering artist overcoming adversity and finding his voice. Grazer is incapable of making a movie that isn't targeted at white-bread America. The producer is Brian Grazer, Ron Howard's longtime partner. Confidential and The Wonder Boys to his credit, knows what he's doing.
